Spring Back is the non-profit organization based in Nashville that breaks down mattresses and helps the formerly incarcerated men and women to get back on with their lives. They also offer consumers, institutions and retailers an alternative to dumping their mattresses to landfills.

Statistics show that more than a 30 million mattresses are shipped to landfills where they cannot be efficiently destroy, instead they take up a huge amount of space and usually take decades to decompose. Spring Back Recycling breaks up mattresses into their raw materials such as cotton, wood, foam etc. Then, every component is sold to scrap buyers for further usage.

FurnitureToday.com posted a new survey where they examined the characteristics that mattress retailers want from their bedding vendors. The overall conclusion is that service and support are still the priority for retailers.

In their last ”Retail Bedding Book”, FurnitureToday.com examined the characteristics at the very top of the list where accurate delivery dates and customer service were crucial. Now they have included support in the theme and there were some interesting results. Retailers are in serious demand for sales and training program, as you can see on the list below. On number 8 they stated the need for strong merchandising programs as well as point-on-sale materials which would explain the features and benefits of their bedding lines (see the number 9). According to retailers, these elements are crucial for success. Overall, retailers desperately need support in training their sales personnel.

Caber Sure Fit announced a new strategy after the end of its ten-year partnership with Protect-A-Bed. This weekend at Canadian Home Furnishings Market, they will introduce the new DreamSerene line of mattresses and pillow encasements. The new line is expected to ship by spring to retailers.

Caber Sure Fit invested one million Canadian dollars into the new DreamSerene line research program. According to them, the new line was inspired by cutomers input and needs. The new line will have numerous valuable features such as: bed bug barriers that are 100% bite proof; allergy shields to guard against dust mites and other microscopic allergens; waterproofing; and antimicrobial protection that should kill 99.9% of those bacteria commonly found in beds, protection against wear and tear, allergens and bed bugs while promoting rest and rejuvenation, training and resource materials, including a comprehensive product guide, to retailers etc.

Change in real estate market and economic turbulance caused the Mattress Manufacturing industry to lose some of its growth in tha last five years. As it was the case with majority of household goods producers, mattress manufacturers experienced substantial growth during the real estate surge that in the first half of the past decaded which ended in 2006. From there on, decline in mattress purchases came as the result of weakened housing market in 2007.

The Mattress Manufacturing industry experienced decline in revenues by an average annual rate of 2.8% to 6.9 billion.Unstabel real estate market was not the only problem for the mattress industry – demand from hotels decreased as well and volatile input costs also disrupted the production and pricing.

Mattress Firm Holding Corp announced that its net revenue raised for fiscal 2011 ending in January 31, 2012. Mattress Firm now expects the net revenue somewhere in range from $690 million to $659 million. Company’s net revenue for fiscal 2010 was $494 million.

The increase of 18% to 19% is reflected by increase in comparable-store sales for fiscal 2011. The Company previously disclosed an expected increase in comparable-store sales of 16% to 17% for fiscal 2011.

Mattress World is closing seven company-owned stores in Portland, Ore. due to hit with a Washington state warrant for about $1.7 million in delinquent sales taxes. Sherri Hiner, from Mattress World said that while the company grew reapidly, they weren’t prepared from negative effects of recession. She also said that the company maide adjustments over the past several years, but the bill from Washington initiated a substantial financial blow and ultimately has done great damage to Mattress World reputation.
